Megalithic Database owes its origin to the same passion for ancient megalithic sites that people all over the world share. The genuine desire to learn as much as possible about these sites, why they were built and how they were built. Megalithic Database is intended to be a resource for any and all who are interested in learning about megalithic sites. We would like to provide the best quality information we can assemble about each site that can be used for research or just for simply discovering how many incredible megalithic sites exist around the world. We are on a mission to document, catalog, and research every known ancient megalithic site worldwide. This will be a megalithic task, but we gladly accept this challenge and view it as a labor of love. We invite you to join us on our quest!

What is an ancient megalithic site?

Ancient megalithic sites are a worldwide phenomenon of stone construction from the distant past that often uses massive stone blocks fit together very precisely with no mortar to bind them together. The stone used in construction is often extremely hard and obtained from sources that are located far from the construction sites requiring advanced engineering and logistics to transport. Megalithic sites are often highly sophisticated in their design, construction, and layout. Many have astronomical alignments with the Sun, Moon, and Constellations.

"Megalithic" literally means "huge stone", but has come to include other types of highly sophisticated stonework from the past as well. Some examples of other types of megalithic construction would be : High precision features cut in to bedrock such as false doors (portals), high precision temples and caves such as the Barabar or Longyou Caves and Kailasa Temple, objects that come from antiquity that would have required highly advanced tools and technology to manufacture such as vases, statues, and sarcophagi.

We will expand on the term "megalithic" greatly and have additional examples of the global megalithic phenomenon in our future blogs.
